At the Schuylkill County Fair, you may have noticed this unusual tool on display. It is a wooden barrel or pail strap tool used during the assembly of wooden barrels. The forged iron hook pivots on a sturdy wooden handle and is designed to catch beneath the edge of a steel or wrought-iron barrel hoop.

To use the tool, the iron hook is placed under the barrel hoop. The handle is then pulled or leveraged downward to draw the hoop into position around the barrel. While the hoop is held under tension, a specialized hammer is used to drive the hoop firmly into place, securing the barrel staves together.
